Places Outside Kathmandu

Gorkha: History and heritage enhances travelmasti and Gorkha being the birth place of King Prithvi Narayan Shah, the founder of modern Nepal and home of the original Gorkha solder's is where nature and history mingles peaks of Himalayas is the magnificent Gorkha Durbar. Tansen: For those who know a bit of the history of the Indian subcontinent, Tansen is the name of the great medieval musical exponent - a jewel in the royal durbar of Akbar, the great. This pristine hill-town of Nepal is no less than a 'Jewel of the nature' offering amazing views of the Himalayas - from Dhaulagiri in the west to Gaurishankerin the north-east. Another vantage point for travelmasti is the hilltop of Srinagar. A leisurely walk in the countryside, and one is at the banks of the Kali Gandaki river, the Majestic Ranighat Palace and more. Situated at an altitude of 1343 m. Tansen - the most popular summer resort in western Nepal is just 6-7 hrs drive from Pokhara.

Janakpur:
The clear, green city in the Terai of the Ramayana fame. According to the epic, most revered with Hindus, the city is the birthplace of sita, wife of Lord Ram, and the model of the perfect Hindu woman. The artistic marble temple of sita (Janaki), popularly known as Naulakha Mandir, attracts thousands of hindu pilgrims throughout the year to their homage. Besides, Ram Sita Bibah Mandap, the pagoda temple marking the place where legendary Ram and Sita got married and the Hanuman temple, dedicated to the monkey god Hanuman deserve a second visit. Many religious festivals, trade fair and other functions and festivities are held here on Bivaha Panchami and Ram Navami days. Very near to the Indian state of Bihar, Janakpur is well connected with Kathmandu by air and road.

Jaleshwar: About 14 km from Janakpur is the town Jaleshwar, once headquarters of Mahottari and sarlahi aoshwra and now of Mahottari district. The historic temple of Jaleshwar Mahadev (the god of water), constructed in Sikhara style, has the Shiva Linga (Phallic) Situated 10 feet underground which is full of water throughout the year, Though legens claim that king Janak (father of Sita) constructed this temple, archaeologically it seems to be of 17th century perhaps built during the reign of the Makawani Sen kings. Barun Sar and Kshireshwar are two ponds behind the temple, wherein. Pilgrims can take a holy dip. Jaleshwar, one of the prominent places of worship in Nepal Terai, buzz with the sounds of bells, sacred chants of priests and pilgrims, specially during the Maha Shiva Ratri and Basant Panchmi, every year.

Situated near the India-Nepal Border, visitors can reach here by Bhitamod (Sursand) in Bihar by road or from Jayanagar - Janakpur Railway. Connectivity is also provided by the East - West highway from Janakpur.

Namche: Situated on the lap of Khumbu Himal, parched above the gorge of the Bhote Kosi, Namche is the main Sherpa settlement and trekking center in the Everest National Park. It is about 240 km from Kathmandu and is generally associated with the Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest), the highest peak in the world, providing entrance to the Everest region. Not Surprisingly, the Sherpa homes have turned into lodges to play host to serious mountaineers as well as pleasure hunters.

The travelmasti with namche, is a rare rendezvous with the nature. Be it the sight of the fiery sunrise on the snows of Kongde, that glistens across the sky, the yaks wandering through the streets, pastel roofs of houses, prayer flags wavering like giant plumes or white frills on the windows and brightly painted frames, the sight everywhere is awesome. The national park, standing on the ridge, at its visitors center has brilliant displays on the fauna, flora and people of the Khumbu. Bristling peaks, glaciers, snowfields, the holy summit of Khumbila, Peaks of Thamserku and the spine of Kongde standing headup in the sky are, as the lamas say, "there are gods everywhere". Reaching into this land of gods: two options are available. Trekking 15 days from Kathmandu or flying from the capital to Lukla and Syangboche in the Everest region.

If it happens to be saturday, its market day in Namche Bazaar. Hundreds come to Namche, a trading post long before the trekkers arrived here, to sell their wares, buy and barter from as far flung places as Tibet and even Kathmandu.
