Kali temple & Belur Math
Built in 1847, on the banks of the Hooghly, north of Calcutta
. Across the river is Belur Math, headquarters of the Ramakrishna
Mission. Join in with the devotees to watch the evening aarti
(light ceremony)
Serampore
5 km further is the interesting waterfront of Serampore, originally
a Danish Colony.

Kali
Temple, Kalighat
According
to the legend, when Lord Shiva's wife Parvati's body was cut
up, one of her fingers fell here. Rebuilt in 1809, this is
an important shrine of Hindu Shakti worship. The temple is
in the southern part of the city.

Nakhoda
Mosque
The largest mosque in Calcutta which can accommodate 10000
worshippers at a time; built in Indo-Saracenic architecture
style.
St.
Paul's Cathedral Church
The most important church of the city; located in between
Birla planetarium and Rabindra Sadan. It was constructed by
Bishop Willson in 1847 . It is the first Episcopal Church
of the East. The Indo-Gothic style architecture of this church
is really impressive.
Parsi Fire Temple : They
cater to the religious needs of the prominent Parsi community
of Calcutta. Located on Metcalf Street and Beliaghata.

Jewish Synagogues
The
Maghen David Synagogue on Jewish Synagogue Street and the
BETHEL on Pollock Street are very old worship houses and a
reminder to the cosmopolitan nature of the city.
Japanese
Buddhist Temple
Located
on the banks of Rabindra Sarovar
St.
John's Church : Built
in 1787 with Grecian columns. The burial ground has the mausoleum
of Job Charnock, founder of Calcutta. One the north west side
of Raj Bhavan.

Parshnath
Jain Temple : The
temple is an ornate mass of mirrors, coloured stones and glass
mosaic, and overlooks a beautiful garden. It is in Shyambazar.
St
Paul's Cathedral
Adjacent and in contrast to the contours of the planetarium
is the Gothic steeple of St. Paul's Cathedral. The communion
plate was presented by Queen Victoria. The interior has exquisite
scriptural scenes. Of interest is the western window. The
candlelight service on Christmas eve is a moving experience
