Indian Museum
The Indian Museum
(1814) -institutions which are amongst the oldest in India and
upto this day remain principal attractions of tourists visiting
Calcutta.
The Museum is
divided into six sections dealing with Archaeology, Art, Anthropology,
Geology, Zoology and Industry including Botany and is controlled
by a Board of Trustees for the coordination of the various sections.
Indian Museum
Nehru Children's Museum
It's a great entertaining place for the children, named after
the first prime minister of India,Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.
It's located at Jawaharlal Nehru Road (formerly Chowringhee
Road). The stories of the Ramayana and the Mahabharata have
been depicted nicely with the help of the animated dolls. Some
science models are also on exhibition; must see for the kids.
Floating Museum
World's first floating museum , located at the "man-of-war"
jetty.
Ashutosh Museum
Maintained by the University of Calcutta; housed lot of exhibits
on the folk art of Bengal.
Gurusaday Museum
On Diamond Harbour Road, the museum has a small but rich collection
of the folk arts and crafts on undivided Bengal. Collection
of over 2000 items. Highlights are the kalighat pats, Jorano
pats (scroll paintings) and exquisite kantha quilts, a thrift
needlecraft of rural Bengal, wood carvings and terra-cotta panels.

Victoria Memorial Museum
Situated on Calcutta Maidan , it
stands majestic in its symmetrical construction of white marble.
There is an Art Gallery and Museum inside. The surrounding open
Space, beautifully laid out with trees, pools and lawns, is
one of the most cherished areas of Calcutta.
