About 250 Kms from Rishikesh, Gangotri is one of the most pious Hindu Pilgrimage. Situated at an altitude of 3,200 m, the sacred shrine of Lord Shiva (Natural Rock Shivaling) is the source of the river Bhagirathi. The Shrine is surrounded by the peaks of Shivling, Satopanth and Bhagirathi sisters. Going by the legends, this natural rock Shivalinga is the place where, Lord Shiva sat when he received the Ganga in his matted locks.

Places to visit
Gaumukh glaciers (18 km.) Gaumukh is snout of the Gangotri Glacier and the source of the Bhagirathi river. Pilgrims trek upto the sacred spot on foot or on ponies to take a holy dip in the ice-cold water.
Enroute accommodation is available at Bhojwasa in Tourist Rest House.Further up from Gaumukh are Tapovan,Nandanvan, Chaukhamba - where famous peaks like shivling,Bhagirathi I,II,III, Kalindi are located and are scaled by mountaineers.
Pilgrims also trek to Nandanvan (6 km) and Kedartal (18 km) from Gangotri.
