Chaitra
Parba is celebrated in Baripada and Rairangpur with performances
of the famous Chhau dance.
Ashokastami
is celebrated in grand form in the Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneshwar,
with a temple chariot festival.
Panasankranti
"Firewalking" takes place in various regions on the
first day of Baisakh. For weeks before, groups of penitents can
be seen journeying to ritual purification centres, wearing saffron
and yellow dhotis, carrying huge fronds of peacock feathers. During
the ceremony, penitents walk on live coals while in a trance,
to the accompaniment of gongs, drums, and costumed dancers.
June
- July
Rathyatra,
the famous temple chariot festival of Lord Jagannath, takes place
in Puri. On the first day, the temple images are carried through
the street in three huge thundering chariots which have made this
event internationally known. Nine days later, the journey is repeated
in the opposite direction. To witness this festival is an experience
of a lifetime, but make sure to book rooms and make all other
arrangements well in advance.

Dussehra
and Diwali are two popular North Indian festivals occurring during
the autumn season; both are celebrated with much colour and festivity
throughout Orissa.
Balijatra,
on full-moon day in the month of Kartik (November), evokes memories
of Orissa's ancient maritime past, by setting gaily decorated
toy ships afloat on rivers throughout the state.
Puri
Beach Festival, a fun and frolic filled festival conducted for
the benefit of visitors who at one place can experience many of
the wonders of this state.
Konark
Dance Festival, held every year with the scenic backdrop of the
magnificent Konark Sun Temple, the festival attracts all lovers
of music and classical dance.
