Thekkady homes one of the world's most spectacular wildlife reserve - The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. Also known as the Tiger reserve the Periyar wildlife sanctuary is spread across 777 sq.kms. The magnificent artificial lake formed by the Mullaperiyar Dam across the Periyar river further attracts the tourist. Adventure lovers can find here herds of elephants, sambars, tigers, gaurs, lion tailed macaques and Nilgiri langurs. Here the tourists have a gamut of options from riding an elephant to a cruise ride on the Periyar lake. The greatest attraction of the wildlife sanctuary is to see the herds of elephants who come down to the lake to play.

Easily accessible Kottayam Railway Station & Ernakulam Railway Station are nearest and Cochin International Airport, about 190 kms is another option.
