The Char Dham consists of the four major shrines of Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. Badrinath is one of the holiest pilgrimage shrine in the Garhwal Himalayas among all these shrines. Badrinath is situated amidst the magnificent background of the Neelkanth mountains in the twin mountain ranges of Nar and Narayan, along the left banks of the Alaknanda river. According to the Hindu Shastras, no pilgrimage is complete unless one visit Badrinath, the abode of Vishnu. Along with Rameshwaram, Dwarka and Puri it is one of the four holiest places in India and it is a living faith with every Hindu to visit the shrine of Badrinath once in a lifetime. Once, this place was carpeted with badris or wild berries and hance also known as Badrivan. The Badrinath temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. This temple remains closed during the winter season and is open from May to November. There are numerous resthouses and dharamshalas in Badrinath to cater the pilgrims and travellers. In summers, the temperature is very cool during the day and cold at night and in winters, it is covered by snow. The best season to visit Badrinath is from May to November. Hindi, Garhwali and English are the main languages which are spoken here |

Badrinath is located on the right bank of the river Alaknanda in the district of Chamoli in the Garhwal region of Uttaranchal. Badrinath is surrounded by the two mountain ranges of Nar and Narayan on its two sides with the Neelkanth peak on the background. This hill resort is a famous pilgrimage for the Hindus as the temple of the God Vishnu is situated here.

Badrinath Temple
Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the Badrinath temple is located on the banks of river Alaknanda. The history of the temple dates back thousands of years to the vedic period, however, the present structure was built by Adi Guru Shankracharya during the 8th century. The entire temple complex is divided into three parts namely the garbha griha or sanctum sanctorum, darshan mandap and the sabha mandap for offering prayers. The temple houses 15 idols including a beautiful one metre high black image of Lord Badrinath.
Pacha Badri
A series of five small Badrinath temples are spread across Badrinath, known as the Panch Badri. The Yogdhyana Badri located close to the Badrinath temple is the winter home to the idol of lord Badrinath and therefore visited by numerous devotees. Other temples are the Bhavishya Badri located at Tapovan, Bridhar Badri located close to Joshimath and the Adi Badri having 16 small temples adorned with intricate carvings.
Tapt Kund
The water of this natural spring is believed to have medicinal powers to cure chronic diseases. Numerous devotees throng the place everyday and wait patiently to have a dip in the sacred waters.
