Scientific name : Sepia pharaonis
Maximum length : 40 cm
Comments : The Pharaoh Cuttlefish can crawl, swim or become ‘jet-propelled’ for short bursts at great speed in order to escape predators. This movement is generated by quickly expelling water from their body, forcing the animal forward.

Scientific name : Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda
Maximum length : 40 cm
Comments : Horseshoe Crabs are amazing animals which pre-date insects, dinosaurs and humans. They are actually not ‘true crabs’, being more closely related to creatures called Trilobites, that existed as early as 544 million years ago.

Scientific name : Phyllopteryx taeniolatus
Maximum length : 45 cm
Comments : The small fins of the Weedy Seadragon make them the slowest moving fish in the world; but this enables them to effortlessly blend in with the surrounding plant material and successfully evade predators.

Scientific name : Apolemichthys trimaculatus
Maximum length : 20 cm
Comments : This small angelfish can be found on offshore reefs. It is easily recognisable by its blue lips and the black spot on its forehead.

Scientific name : Naso brevirostris
Maximum length : 50 cm
Comments : Like most members of the surgeonfish family, this species has two very sharp ‘scalpels’ on either side of its tail. They use these blade-like appendages for defence.

Scientific name : Cheilinus undulatus
Maximum length : 200 cm
Comments : Weighing in at up to 200 kilograms, the territorial Humphead Maori Wrasse is an awesome sight. This Wrasse uses its strong teeth to crush crustaceans and break open coral branches in search of invertebrate prey.

Scientific name : Odontodactylus scyllarus
Maximum length : 20 cm
Comments : Mantis Shrimp have some of the most deadly weaponry in the animal kingdom. In various species, their large front legs have evolved to either spear or smash their prey.

Scientific name : Synanceia verrucosa
Maximum length : 35 cm
Comments : The Stonefish is the world’s most venomous fish; one sting from a dorsal fin could kill a human. As their name indicates, this species is usually sedentary; hiding amongst the rocks ready to ambush passing prey.

Scientific name : Histrio histrio
Maximum length : 16 cm
Comments : The front of this species’ dorsal fin is shaped like a ‘fishing rod’ or lure. The fish wiggles its lure like a worm; encouraging smaller fishes to investigate.
The camouflaged Anglerfish then quickly swallows the inquisitive fish with its large mouth.

Scientific name : Pangasianodon gigas
Maximum length : 300 cm
Comments : Weighing in at up to 300 kilograms, this is the largest freshwater fish species in the world. However, these animals are critically endangered due to environmental degradation of their Mekong River habitat.

Scientific name : Aonyx cineria
Maximum length : 95 cm
Comments : These, the smallest of all otters, are social animals which form strong family groups. Parents remain together after breeding to raise their 2-6 young, which remain with the group as they mature.

Scientific name : Arapaima gigas
Maximum length : 300 cm
Comments : The Arapaima is the world’s second largest freshwater fish species. These ancient fish can survive drought by breathing dry air and resting in a burrow until the waters return.
