This 42 meter high, free standing arch, designed by Lutyens and founded on February 10 1921 by the Duke of Connaught, commemorates the 70,000 Indian soldiers who died during World War I. "Amar Jawan Jyoti", another memorial, added under the arch in 1971 is the nation's tribute to Indian Jawans, who laid their lives during Indo-Pak War of 1971. The names of the demised soul (soldiers) are inscribed all along the walls of the arch. The Amar Jawan Jyoti was added to the monument after the nation got its independence. The imposing structure of India Gate is surrounded by spick and span verdant lawns which seems irenic sometimes. The convivial atmosphere around the expanse of India gate is formed by the hawkers selling tasty eatables and kids playing different outdoor games in the widespread gardens. The visitors get smitten to the cool breeze which flows smoothly to change the frame of mind for returning back to home.
