A stone observatory. Largest of Jai Singh's five remarkable observatories, its complex instruments whose setting and shapes are scientifically designed, represent the high points of medieval Indian astronomy. The interesting edifice of Jantar Mantar was erected between 1728 and 1734. The literal meaning of the term “Jantar Mantar” is ‘instruments for measuring the harmony of the heavens’. The creator of this commendable establishment, Jai Singh, chose to make the structure of stone with marble facing. This one was the largest of all the observatories he constructed in his lifetime. The king used to visit here regularly with his trusted astronomers. There are altogether 14 instruments fitted in the complex of Jantar Mantar. This establishment may not be of any use today in the astronomy, but it gives an idea about how the actual origin of astronomy developed to an advanced level and revealed many secrets of Universe.
