Built in 1799 A.D. the Hawa Mahal or Palace of Winds is a major Rajput landmark. This five storey building along the main street of the old city is in pink splendor with semi octagonal and delicately honey combed sandstone windows. The monument was originally conceived with the aim of enabling ladies of the royal household to watch the everyday life and royal processions of the city. Hawa Mahal is the main place of interest in the city of Jaipur. The awe inspiring Rajputana architecture of Hawa Mahal reveals the sagas of bygone era. This pyramid-shaped facade has 953 small windows which are decked out with tiny lattice work. These windows are worth observing as they are made up of pink sandstone and called as "Jharokhas". The intricate designing on these windows is eye catching. Through these windows, the fresh, unpolluted air of Jaipur enters into the palace and keeps the atmosphere cool.
